“I am disabled. For years that was so hard to admit. I couldn’t mention out loud my neurodivergence. I whispered about my post-traumatic stress disorder, insisting ‘I’m better now.’ I was a champion for the disabled who didn’t want to talk about her own disabilities. It was disingenuous, but I didn’t know how to come to terms with the fact that I was disabled. I was still scared that admitting my disability publicly would convince people I was not able to do anything.” Joanna French writes on her experience with disability.

Jesus entered the world of people He was with, and used communication that they would understand. But we often ask disabled persons to join in our activities and learn to function in our world. When we learn from Him, by entering the world of those who find our ways of communicating difficult, sometimes incredible connection can happen.
We now recognize that there are alternative, nonverbal ways in which we can communicate. Most churches, however, still rely heavily on the traditional sermon to convey God’s message. As I contemplated how other forms of communication could be integrated into churches, I was struck by how Jesus communicated with people. He used a variety of different approaches to express the Father’s message.
