Serving with Thanksgiving

Oswald Chambers in My Utmost for His Highest shares this,

“Joshua 24:15 says Choose you this day who you will serve….but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.’ It is a deliberate calculation, not something into which you drift easily…..The proposition is between you and God; do not confer with flesh and blood about it.”

Our choosing to serve God must be taken seriously. We will have many opportunities in our everyday dealings to decide who we will serve. We must decide what, or to whom we will choose to serve, and how.

Each day and each and every moment, we will be given choices by the world, by others in our lives, things at work, and things at home, all vying for our attention and our choices.

The question is what will we choose?

When others come to us with things that look shiny and appetizing (much like the fruit in the garden of Eden to Eve), we need to remember to intentionally come to the Lord for His direction in what we choose. We need help to choose what is right, kind, true, and noble. When things in our life, at home, or work call for our attention we need help to discern if we are choosing our own selfish desires; what looks easy, fun, and exciting, or if our mind is stayed on Jesus for giving us direction on the decisions we need to make.

In a life caring for a child or adult child with special needs, or our elderly loved ones, we need help to choose the best over what just looks good to us. We need help to choose His will over our will, because we know that He knows what is best for us.

  • We need help to not be deceived, for God will not be mocked (according to Galatians6:7)

  • We need to see from His perspective, and to make choices based on His will for, and in, our lives

  • We need help that, in all our ways, we are making sure to live for Him and as an example to those around us.

We know we fail. May we gain His understanding so that we and our household will serve Him all the days of our lives! In doing so, we will have amazing gratitude because of what we’ve learned, how we’ve grown, and how we serve…..all in His name!

May this month of thanksgiving be a blessing to you and yours!
